Listen to the Guns n’ Graves theme song…

When John finally regained consciousness, he had the mindset that he’d just be waking from one crazy dream.
Instead, there were three faces hovering over his – Athan, the Keeper of Minds, and the Keeper of Souls.
John, speak to me, the Keeper of Minds shouted.
“His eyes are open,” Athan said, “he’s alive…”
“I hope so,” the Keeper of Souls said.  “I haven’t felt him enter me yet.”
John blinked a few times and took a deep breath.  He was overcome by the stench of dirt and mud.  He turned his head and saw the small bump sticking out of the ground a few feet away.  It was himself.  His face, mouth open, eyes staring off into space.
                       “Is that me?” John asked.
“John, please, stand up first,” Athan said.  He put his massive hand out and John took it.  Athan pulled and John was back on his feet.  He wiped his forehead and felt his stomach turn again.
“Are you sure you’re fine?” the Keeper of Souls asked.
“No,” John said.  “I’m not okay.”
John wrestled himself free from the small group and walked over to the body in the dirt.  It was definitely his body.  Unless he had a twin that his parents never told him about.
“What happened to me?” John asked staring at the body.
The Keeper of Souls stepped forward and adjusted her shirt.  She puckered her lips, trying to find the words to say.  The Keeper of Minds shook his head and pointed to Athan.  Athan moved next to John.
“John, we should move away from here,” Athan spoke in quiet voice.  “I don’t want you to be bothered anymore than you are.”
                       John stayed silent.
Athan touched John’s shoulder.  John turned and in one movement, he grabbed Athan’s wrist and twisted it, bringing the big man to his knees.  John then pressed down on Athan’s wrist and he crumpled to the dirt.
The Keeper of Souls jumped forward but the Keeper of Minds held her back.
John felt more rage and anger in him than he could ever remember.  Part of him saw Athan and recalled that Athan had saved him on more than one occasion.  But another part of himself reminded the same thing only that maybe it would have been easier to just die than be saved…
“Talk about worlds,” John said, “talk about Keepers.  Talk about living.  Talk about dying.  Tell me I should be dead and I’m not.  Then show me a body that’s myself.”
John pulled a gun from its holster and pointed it at Athan.  Athan swooped his leg to take out John but John jumped.  He did it without thinking about it.  Like it was instinct.
“He’s…,” the Keeper of Souls started to say, but her sentence was cut off by the booming sound of the handgun.
The bullet tore through Athan’s head.  To John’s dismay, there wasn’t any splatter.  No blood.  No gore.  John looked at the smoking gun.  Realizing what had just happened, he dropped to his knees and grabbed Athan’s hand.
                       “I’m sorry,” he whispered.  “I just couldn’t… I can’t…”
“No hard feelings,” a voice said.
John turned and looked up and saw Athan.  He was a transparent figure, ghost like.  After a few seconds, he become more and more whole – more real.
“How?” John asked.  He looked back and saw that Athan’s body was still in the dirt…
“How?” he asked, slowly rising to his feet.
The Keeper of Souls looked at the Keeper of Minds.  “Did you see it?”
“No worries,” the Keeper of Minds said, “he’s the one.”
